Journal #3

Frankenstein Journal #3

Consider the following quote and question and then write a half-page journal response.

Frankenstein: "The hour of my weakness is past, and the period of your power is arrived. Your threats cannot move me to do an act of wickedness; but they confirm me in a resolution of not creating you a companion in vice. Shall I, in cool blood, set loose upon the earth a dæmon, whose delight is in death and wretchedness. Begone! I am firm, and your words will only exasperate my rage."

Frankenstein's “hour of weakness” was also considered to be a moment of compassion. Was Frankenstein's agreeing to create the creature a mate a sign of weakness, compassion, both or none of the above?

Frankenstein Journal #2

Consider the following quotes and then write a half-page journal response.

Frankenstein's Creature: “Was man, indeed, at once so powerful, so virtuous and magnificent, yet so vicious and base? He appeared at one time a mere scion of the evil principle, and at another as all that can be conceived of noble and godlike.”

Shakespeare's Hamlet: “What a piece of work is man! how noble in reason! how infinite in faculty! in form and moving how express and admirable! in action how like an angel! in apprehension how like a god! the beauty of the world, the paragon of animals!”

Nietzsche: “The world is beautiful, but has a disease called man. Man is the cruelest animal.”
